AI adoption is rising, but value still has to be proven
Statistics Canada reported that 19.2% of Canadian businesses used AI to produce goods or deliver services in the second quarter of 2026, up from 12.2% in the comparable 2025 survey. That is a Canada-wide measure and does not establish a BC-specific rate or prove that each deployment earned a return.
The practical question for an owner is narrower: which recurring task consumes enough time, creates enough delay, or affects enough revenue to justify changing the process?

Choose among four kinds of solution
- Existing-software capability: start here when a tool already approved and used by the team has a suitable AI feature. This can reduce integration and adoption work.
- Dedicated AI software: use when the task needs specialized capability, repeatability, permissions, or records beyond a general assistant.
- Implementation provider: use when data preparation, integration, workflow redesign, security, or custom automation is material to the result.
- Training and operating guidance: use when the largest gap is people knowing what to do, what not to do, and how to review the work.
A tool without training may become shelfware. Training without approved tools and workflows may become disconnected experimentation.
Score a first use case before buying
Give each question a simple low, medium, or high answer. The best first pilot is usually frequent, measurable, reversible, and supported by information the business can appropriately use.

Protect personal and confidential information
For many BC private-sector organizations, PIPA regulates the collection, use, and disclosure of personal information. Before staff place customer, employee, health, financial, or other sensitive information into an AI service, understand the purpose, authority, vendor data use, storage, subprocessors, retention, deletion, security, and human-review process.
The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security recommends caution about sharing private information, verification of generated content, a cyber-security risk plan, clear AI-use policies, and careful vendor selection. Those controls belong in the buying and training process—not after an incident.
A practical 30-day pilot
- Days 1–3: map the workflow, baseline, permitted data, owner, users, and stop conditions.
- Days 4–7: configure the smallest useful solution and test on approved historical or synthetic examples.
- Days 8–21: run controlled live work with accountable human review and record time, corrections, exceptions, and user friction.
- Days 22–27: compare the full process—including review and rework—with the baseline.
- Days 28–30: decide to expand, revise, replace, or stop. Document why.
Do not call a pilot successful because people opened the tool. Success means the workflow improved under real constraints.
What to ask a software vendor or provider
- Show the workflow using realistic inputs and exceptions.
- Explain what must be configured, integrated, reviewed, and maintained.
- Document how customer information is used, stored, retained, and deleted.
- Separate licence price from implementation, support, training, and switching costs.
- State the evidence behind performance claims and the limits of that evidence.
- Explain how the business can export its information and leave.
- Identify sponsorship, referral fees, or other commercial relationships.
The decision rule
Proceed when the task is clear, the improvement is measurable, the information can be used appropriately, human accountability remains intact, and the business can stop safely. Pause when the problem is vague, the vendor’s evidence does not resemble the use case, the privacy or security explanation is unclear, or the contract is larger than the proof.
