How to design an AI literacy program for a BC school

Choose the grade band and learning outcome

A K–12 course is not one curriculum. Younger learners may explore patterns, personal information, fairness, and the difference between a tool and a person without using an open-ended account. Older students can investigate prompting, evidence, bias, attribution, workflow design, careers, and the social consequences of technology.

BC’s Applied Design, Skills, and Technologies curriculum supports experiential design, digital literacy, emerging technologies, ethical considerations, and progression across grade bands. Use the official learning standards and local educator judgment rather than claiming blanket curriculum approval.

  • Grades 4–6: patterns, tool limits, personal information, fairness, and creative teacher-led activities.

Keep the learning human-centred

BC’s Ministry of Education and Child Care provides supports for responsible AI use in K–12 and emphasizes that AI should complement human relationships and learning. A teacher should be able to choose whether and how a tool supports the specific learners and lesson.

The program should include discussion, creation, peer review, reflection, and explanation—not only interaction with a model. Students should be able to show what evidence they used, what the system contributed, what they changed, and what remains uncertain.

Build privacy and safety before accounts

Children and youth require stronger safeguards. BC and other Canadian privacy authorities have called for necessary and proportionate collection, limits on secondary uses such as marketing, product improvement, or AI training without specific consent, and privacy and algorithmic impact assessment for educational technologies.

A school pilot should identify the applicable policy and legal regime, approved vendor and account configuration, information collected, purpose, access, location, retention, deletion, secondary use, incident process, parent/caregiver communication, accessibility, and alternatives for students who do not use the tool.

  • Do not require students to enter real personal, family, health, immigration, discipline, or other sensitive information into practice prompts.
  • Do not use an unrestricted AI chatbot as the first product for younger students.
  • Do not use AI output as the sole basis for grading or a high-impact decision.
  • Provide an educator-controlled activity and a non-AI route to the same learning outcome.

Teach a repeatable evidence method

Students need a method that survives changes in tools. Define the question, identify the claim, locate the original or authoritative source, compare the evidence, separate fact from inference, and disclose material AI assistance where the assignment requires it.

Bias and fairness should be taught through concrete examples and affected perspectives, not as a checkbox. Ask who is represented, who may be missing, what assumptions shape the output, who could be harmed by reliance, and what evidence would challenge the result.

Pilot with educators before scaling

Begin with one teacher, one grade band, one bounded module, and a small set of observable outcomes. Review student work, educator burden, accessibility, privacy, misconceptions, parent questions, and tool failures. Revise the curriculum before adding more schools, self-serve accounts, or automated assessment.

Is AI literacy already part of BC curriculum?

BC curriculum includes digital literacy, design, emerging technologies, ethical and legal considerations, critical thinking, communication, and social responsibility that can support AI learning. A specific AIforBC module would still need educator mapping and review; it should not be represented as officially approved without that evidence.

Which grades should pilot first?

A Grades 8–12 teacher-led pilot is a practical starting point because students can engage more deeply with evidence, privacy, bias, attribution, workflow design, and consequences. The final choice belongs to the education partner.

Should students have individual AI accounts?

Not by default. First determine the learning need, approved tool, privacy and safety controls, age requirements, alternatives, and school process. Many foundational activities can be teacher-led without individual accounts.

Can AI grade student work?

Do not use AI as the sole basis for grading or another high-impact educational decision. Any proposed use needs context-specific review, transparency, human responsibility, and an appropriate challenge process.
